Leeds has a world-class calendar of musical events and top international performing companies such as Opera North, Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre. Popular festivals include the Leeds and Reading Music Festival, Party in the Park, Classical Fantasia, and the Leeds Carling Festival.   

The list below outlines some of the main cultural attractions that Leeds has to offer: 

  • Leeds City Art Gallery according to 'The Times' has “probably the best collection of twentieth century British art outside London .
  • The new Leeds City Museum has four floors of exhibitions and a large central arena featuring an exhibition on the Ancient Worlds. There are Galleries showing "Living Planet" "Leeds Collectors" "World View" and "The Leeds Story" 
  • Since opening in 1997, Thackray Museum has been named UK Museum of the Year, England’s Visitor Attraction of the Year, and has been short listed for European Museum of the Year.
  • Leeds International Concert Season in Leeds Town Hall is the largest concert season of its kind in the UK , with over 200 events from September to May each year.
  • The Henry Moore Institute is acclaimed for its sculpture collections and research.
  • Leeds College of Music is the largest music college in Britain and hosts events throughout the year.
  • The Jewish Film Festival, now in its 13th year, will run from January to April 2009 and visit some 15 cities across the UK. This year the festival comes to the Cottage Road Cinema and the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Community Centre in Leeds.
  • The Carriageworks is a community theatre venue with 350-seat auditorium and numerous conference and meeting rooms.
  • Leeds Grand theatre and art gallery presents shows for all the family, including West End and Broadway musicals, with some of the biggest stars around.
  • Opened in 1990, the West Yorkshire Playhouse produces a wide range of work, from classic British and European drama to new writing, as well as presenting some of the best in touring theatre productions.
